Content Management System (CMS)

A CMS (or Content Management System) is typically a web based application which allows web authors to manage the content for their web pages. The user uses the system through a web browser where they can manage the text shown on the web site and control the way the web site looks.

How it works

Typically, the actual content (the text shown on the web page) is stored in a storage format such as an online database or an XML file instead of being stored on the actual page. The styling of the website (which determines how the website looks) is stored seperately to the content. When a user visits one of your web pages, the CMS automatically finds the right content and combines it with the styling to build the web page.

Without a CMS, updating a web page would require the user to manually sift through HTML code and locate the text that needs to be updated. The HTML pages, unless you have advanced knowledge of web servers, can sometimes be difficult to access and edit. With a CMS, content can be easily added, removed and edited without needing to look through any complex HTML code.

Advantages of Using a CMS

  • CMS’s allow users who have little or no knowledge of web based programming languages to create and manage web pages easily.
  • CMS systems typically have a search capability, enabling your users to locate content within your web site easily.
  • Any website design changes are instantly updated on all your web pages.
  • The use of a CMS reduces the site maintenance costs.
